Hey, I'm Published!

I wrote an essay for the Huffington Post about fearlessness (if there is such a thing) as part of their promotional tour for Ariana Huffington's book, On Becoming Fearless. And whaddya know...they published it.

Here it is! With a fancy picture and bio and everything!

And, as long as we're on the subject, here are some more exclamation points!!!

And a few more!!!!!!!!!

Great stuff Liz. Nicely done. My fear was always the diaper-knickers transition. I wanted to keep them in diapers as long as I could 'cos they were just easier than potty-training. Oh, I pretended it was because I didn't want to "push" them before they were ready but really it was because, at 30, I was still not ready for potty-training.

It is still astonishing to me how much poo they can coil up in these tiny wee colons of theirs at one time. I think they keep a separate colon each in a different dimension until it comes time to evacuate. At which time anyone with half a nostril will evacuate themselves, via the back door, running if they also have half a brain.

I haven't worked out a way to stop feeding them yet though, without their noticing.

Awesome! Congrats!

I took a babysitting course when I was a preteen and spent endless hours earning money looking after other people's children. I offered up my services to girlfriends with children. I couldn't wait for the day that I would tackle motherhood. Then my girlfriend confessed to me that when I looked after her newborn son, I put on his diaper backwards. I was aghast! How could I? Talk about opening a can of worms.

Yay!! I loved it too. I wonder if professional success has driven a lot of the competi-mommy behavior (though obviously not in your case). That is, moms who were at the top of their field career-wise and then left the workforce to care for their children. It's hard to let go of being the best and having the best.

And I'd changed my share of baby girl diapers before having mine, but I hadn't changed a baby boy diaper until I subbed at the girls' school.

Congratulations on the post! That was fun to read. I had never even HELD a baby until the nurse put Ryan in my arms. I was beyond clueless. We were so afraid to give him his first bath that we had to call a friend's Mom who was a nurse to come help us!

Yea, yea, yea! First Gloria Steinem and now Ariana Huffington! Not bad for a week's time!

The best thing I've ever heard anyone say to another woman in a difficult labor is "You CAN do this. This will NOT be the hardest thing you will ever have to do for this baby."

The same could be said for diapers, I suppose.
