It was bound to happen.
The first word. Cat. Clear as day.
She articulated it quite deliberately as she examined two cute white kitties in a cage at Petco, Nate tells me.
I'm not entirely surprised; Thalia had been working on cat for days now. The fascinating part to me is that she was able to identify two cute white kitties as the same species as the horrible hissing black beast she usually sees around the house.
It's not as if I didn't get my own awesome experience in its stead. Why right at that very same moment that my daughter was uttering her first word yesterday, I was somewhere over the Rockies, staring across the airplane cabin at a guy who looked almost like a celebrity.
That kind of thing happens on the New York to LA flights all the time. It's crazy that way.

Aww..first tooth and now first word? That's great!
Kitty was my daughter's first word, too.
Sheesh?! What - will have a blog by 2! What a smarty girl. :) Sorry you missed it - but rest assured - you will be hearing it MUCHLY...
Another milestone. Sorry you missed it, but as Kristen says, you'll be hearing it all the time.
My 17 month old hasn't said too much yet. It's kind of strange after having an older one that talked and talked all the time.
Pretty soon she'll be calling you, Nate, the rug, her socks and her toes "cat." And the hissing black beast could be "mama."
Hope you're having fun - how were the waffles?
How exciting! Animals have a way of influencing our kids! My daughter's first word "dog"! You will hear it!! And so much more!
I remember distinctly, how thrilled we were, upon hearing our daughter's first word. Bird. Everything was bird. It was cute. At first. Until she discovered a new word. No. Followed, eventually by more words. I have been begging her to be quiet ever since...
Congrats on cat. May it bring you joy upon hearing it. And may she never learn the word NO.
Cat... That's impressive! Most kids start with mama or dada. Cat's kinda special I think. Next thing you know she'll be saying, "You horrible hissing black beast!"
Hooray for Thalia! Words!!!! Archer's first wordy was "dog" but we call the dogs, "dragons" so it was actually da-gon. So, yeah. Cats and dogs, girls and boys. It makes sense, kinda. Hope you're enjoying LA (heh). Never mind about the weather, it looks like rain.
Cat! Awww...my first word was "Up," because even at an early age, I was no fan of this walking thing and instead, preferred to be carried everywhere. Still do.
Your cat does indeed look Beelzebub-spawned. Golly! It seems to be sucking all the light out of the room in the photo and it was only after some desperate flapping for the 'back' button that I managed to prevent the whole of my own soul from being sucked into the screen. As it is she only got a wee bit, butI feel a new ... emptiness. I may sue.
Our first words were less of a big deal for me than my wee-est one, finally weighing more than our cat. She was 2 lbs when she was born and Trouble was 6 times her size (we're talking a cat of some prodigious girth here). It was a great day in the problemchildbride household, when she cracked it and was no longer the smallest mammal in the house/street/town. Bless her tiny wee self.
cat huh? everytime she says cat, you should bark at her.
how was LA dammit??
My kids both said "Da" first, but their first multi-syllable word (or words) was/were "kitty cat". I didn't even realize I SAID kitty cat until then.
"no" and "go bye-bye"... these were the first words my boys uttered. 25 and/or 22 years later, they still don't actually understand "no" (from me and/or my husband) and they refuse to "go bye-bye". (someday they'll move out... i just know it!)
i wouldn't worry about not being there when she said her first word...(trust me, once they start, they don't stop for a long long time!) besides... you'll always be able to tell her about the possible celebrity sighting on a plane (pcsoap) that happened on the same memorable day she first spoke... so, y'know, that's something!
(trust me, you'll have many opportunities to be there for other memorable/wonderful childhood "firsts". don't beat yourself up over this!)
: )
the celebrity. it was bob barker wasn't it. huh? am i right? am i right?
Congratulations! You produced a smartypants. My girl is 11 months and there hasn't been any clear words yet. I'm so impressed with Thalia's obvious genius. :)
Cat. That's awesome. My baby's first word was "ball." Now she won't shut up! :)
I know those flights- We do the Nashville to LA route twice a year and always see a few country music singers on board. Last trip, it was Keith Urban. Woot.
Awww....congratulations!
(And what about peanuts? Were you having a bag of peanuts and a teeny tiny bottle of gin while you were having your own experience?)
My little one had her own first today. She's almost 3 and talking really well but today she dropped something and said, "Shit!"
Cat was both of my kids first word too! Congrats!
Still no words over here and my kid is what, 15 months older than Thalia or something? Damn overachieving New Yorkers.
But seriously, congrats.
That was my son's first word too! He didn't say Mom until the 62nd word. Wow, I really rate!
I so knew that when you said -The first word -that it was going to be something that Nate told you-for that I am sorry you missed it but there is still mama before dada-to be fair you should each have your own firsts!
The pressure is on to teach my little one cat. or Hot or Up. I've been stuck on those for weeks now. I heard that a child has to hear a word 500 times before they will be able to master it. All I'm getting is "Yah, Yah, Yah-Yah." (Which is pretty cool in it self)
Congrats on the splendid achievement!
Your baby looked at my swollen black ski jacket and said,"C-t." She knows her black for sure!
